I'd
like to congratulate and thank all of the committed volunteeers who worked tirelessly
on my campaign. We were successful in getting the NDP message out in the riding
and we did as well as could be expected at the polls. I say that because I note
that we were marginalized by the media and our message was buried under the distraction
of faith-based religion that served both the Tories and the Liberals well.
We
should keep in mind that 47% of the people did not vote. Perhaps, if they had
we would have seen a different outcome. While some voters are apathetic, cynical
and frustrated, I think the problem is more complex than that. In our modern,
image-based society, it is difficult to raise anything more than superficial discussion
of issues. We have symbols and slogans, but very little critical thinking about
the politics of everyday life. By that I mean that the people do not connect their
alienation to the political system. In effect, they have been depoliticized.
Once
the dust settles, we intend to carry on in Mississauga-Streetsville with monthly
events that feature fun, social contact and education. So stay connected and plan
to attend and bring friends.
"Never
doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world.
Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."
